Our Dogs
THE BREED: Brussels Griffon is a breed of toy-sized
indoor dogs. The breed was developed in Belgium and includes ancestry
from other breeds including pug, affenpinscher, and a small spaniel.
They are affectionately called monkey-face dogs because of their round
head, large black expressive eyes, short nose and prominent lips. Their
expressions are almost human-like. The AKC standard is 7-12 lbs, although
smaller or larger dogs can be found depending on your need and situation.
They are very intelligent and sensitive and love to be with their family.
They are excellent pets and are great around children, other animals,
and other dogs. The Brussels Griffon comes in two basic coat types.
The rough coat is a longer coat that needs grooming and trimming. Hand
plucking the hair will maintain the true color. This coat can be longer
and soft, or more ideally have a wiry feel. The smooth coat is much
like the coat of a Boston Terrier and needs no maintenance. The common
colors of Brussels Griffon is red (sometimes with a black muzzle), black,
and belge ( a mixed color with different colors on each hair, much like
a wild rabbit. Belge can come in lighter or darker shades). Occasionally
other colors are found, such as chocolate, wheat, black and tan, etc.
They should have black eyes, black nose, and black claws and paw pads.
